2020-2021 Scholarship recipient, Nikki Treber

Nikki Treber is a painter whose investigations span materiality, patterns and abstraction but always circle back to portraiture, community and stories. Raised in Revelstoke, BC, she moved to Vancouver in 2015 seeking broader access to arts and culture. Upon arrival she found opportunity and a sense of self in Vancouver’s lush landscaping industry. Her experience problem solving in nature; working with aspects such as growth, colour and light, informs her artistic practice, which in turn informs her garden design. The exchange between these two fields of work creates a momentum that feeds her creatively, as does an engagement with the various stories and practices throughout her community that form her understanding of the world. In the pursuit of balance and presence, she encourages blurred boundaries between the everyday, the professional, the personal, and her artistic practice.

Nikki is currently engaged in a Visual Arts degree at Emily Carr University and aims to continue her studies by pursuing a Master’s in Landscape Architecture. She actively aspires in her everyday to make great art, create and maintain beautiful gardens, cook great food and nurture connections to her community

Brittney Appleby is an interdisciplinary artist whose main focus is in film, performance, and installation. Her work seeks to combine analogue and obsolete technology with digital mediums. The main mediums she has been working with recently have been 16mm, super8 and 35mm slide film. One of the reasons she feels drawn to working with an analogue process is its unpredictable nature, no one piece or print is the same. It is also important to her as an artist to use and preserve obsolete technologies and working methods—as the knowledge and much of the equipment is becoming harder and harder to access due to loss of maintenance of specialized knowledge and evolving digital technologies.

Common themes and ideas that she explores are time, death/rebirth, the body, transition, and trauma. As an experimental filmmaker, she uses film as an alternative surface for painting and drawing by using inks, chemicals and mark making, and has experimented with found footage, pinhole cameras, eco-processing, and optical printing. Much of the work she's made, and will continue making, will be ephemeral. She appreciates art that exists within a certain timeline and that will continuously be changing and adapting depending on the space, time, and audience.

Brittney Appleby has her Diploma in Fine Arts from Langara College and is in her 4th year of her BFA at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She is also a member of EMO Collective, an analogue and new media collective for women, QTBIWOC, and LGBTQ2S+ identified people.

Vincent Chorabik is a multi-disciplinary conceptual artist. He studies Visual Art at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and will receive his BFA in 2019. He is a published author and Writing and Drawing Instructor at ECUAD and Vincent's Studio, respectively. Vincent fuses traditional ideas and methods with contemporary and idiosyncratic ones. He stands apart from his peers in the art community by breaking from the norm and creating his own path. His work has been labeled "shocking," "beautiful," and "funny." www.vincentchorabik.com

Emily Carr Scholarship Winner 2017-2018

Lindsey Curtis is an emerging artist, currently completing her BFA at Emily Carr University. Her deep appreciation for nature and wild, untouched environments provide inspiration for her work. She is interested in ideas of time and space and connection through the simplicity of the natural world. In addition, she is interested in the connection between literary and visual arts, “I enjoy pulling phrases and stanzas from poetry, including my own work and the work of other writers. I think incorporating text can have a powerful effect on the viewer, whether the text is seen directly in the work or has been the point of departure for the piece.”

Emily Carr University Winner 2016-2017

In my painting I explore a multitude of themes and styles, with my most recent and consistent focus being in the realm of classical realism and it’s cultural history. Continually, I am preoccupied with the notion of goodness and perfection within the “modern world” and how these notions-and their difficult histories-are, or are not, communicated within my own work. It is of current interest to me how arguably puritanical themes of perfection and idealism are often naturalized within this style of painting and complexity of this history is, to me, equally irresistible and morbid. This interest continues to provide and provoke inspiration and careful reflection.

Alexine McLeod - Artist Statement

I am a visual artist primarily working in the mediums of painting and collage. My work consists of abstract forms, saturated colours and found synthetic sculptural materials that are adhered to an often unconventional, two dimensional support. My process is experimental and incorporates chance encounter, as well as deliberate action. I am interested in the interplay between heterogeneous forms and materials that create tension and ambiguity within a given work. Working spontaneously and being unconcerned with the final outcome provides unexpected challenges and surprises. The moment the process becomes too considered is the moment that I know I have to put the work aside and begin to work on something new. I like to explore and challenge the subjective notions of painting by fracturing my creative process; I often work on multiple pieces at once, and use photography to play with sight lines and construction.
